ARTIST CHALLENGE

Here is the first of many riddles to come...

Read the clues and figure out which artist is being described. Leave your answer in the comments. The first MSU NAEA member to leave the correct answer, as well as the name of two works of theirs, will win a free drink at our next meeting (February 22, 2010 at Panera off of National at 8:00 pm)!

-they became an orphan at the age of 11
-had a violent temper (they had been arrested many times throughout their life)
-was ridiculed for using models from the lower classes of society
-is well known for their chiaroscuro technique of partially illuminating figures
-lived through the end of the 16th century and the beginning of the 17th century
-like many early European artists, they take their artist name from the town they were born in

Caravaggio (Michelangelo Merisi) is the artist! Two paintings are: "Boy with a Basket of Fruit" and "The Fortune Teller."
