Fall 2012 NAEA

MSU ART EDUCATION STUDENTS,

Our first meeting was held August 29th and we had a very successful turn out. We will be holding an officer meeting Sunday September 16th and we encourage anyone who is able to come please do! Our normal group meetings will be held on Wednesdays, which our next is being held September 26th @ Brick city 6pm. We are going to be doing a lot of fundraising this year to make sure as many people as possible are able to go to the National Conference in Fort Worth. We are also going to have a little NAEA display of work in the halls of the Art Ed Section of Brick city. If you are a member and would like to include your work get a hold of one of us for more information.

Being a member of NAEA is very important because having connections with other art teachers will potentially help get you a job right out of college or even before graduation! It is also a great way to meet friends that can relate to you, and help you out with new lesson plans or areas of expertise!

Our Officer meetings are held at:
The club house of The Villages at Nathanael Greene.
1950 S Scenic Ave. 65807.

Etc. Center

Story from the Co-President,Allison:

This week during student teaching I was introduced to the best kept secret in Springfield, MO. THE ETC. CENTER! If you're an art teacher or just a teacher, or a student teacher (even practicum student) I want you to visit this place if you haven't already! Behind Bailey Alternative High School there are a set of doors that read Welcome to the Etc. Center. After calling the school secretary and getting the okay, you'll gain access to what's behind those doors. You sign in and grab a bag and let yourself go. This is an art teacher's dream come true and I have no idea why MSU Art Ed students were not told about it.

This shop is run by students at Bailey. Each barrel and shelf is filled (and extremely organized) with recycled goods that are PERFECT for classroom art projects. While I was there with my cooperating teacher we grabbed THIRTY plastic sandwich containers for a paper mache bowl project.
Some other goodies I saw:
Glass bottles
Pill bottles
Hallmark Cards
Plastic Bags
Plastic Bottle Caps
Paper Bags
Styrofoam
Large Coffee Cans (metal and plastic)
Drink Umbrellas
Three Ring Binders
School Books
Folders
Milk Jugs

and the list goes on and on. The best part is that there are enough of each item to fill a material list for almost any art project! Check it out for yourself!!! Call Bailey High School and explain yourself and ask when it would be convenient for them to let you in. They are open Tuesdays and Thursdays 2-4pm, all other hours must be requested over the phone.

Mark Your Calendars!

Here is what we came up with at our meeting yesterday...

February 13th: Valentine's Bake Sale
March 1st-4th: National Conference in NYC!
March 16th: St. Patrick's Bake Sale
March 22nd-25 MAEA Spring Conference in St. Charles
April 21st: Opportunity to be a judge for a high school art show (email Judith Fowler)
April 27th: Simply Yo FROZEN YOGURT night!!!

If you are New York bound PLEASE help with as many events as possible. We are looking for baked good donations for both bake sales. We are in the process of creating a new T shirt design. In the meantime we want to sell our current shirts. Anyone have ideas of where to sell them? We loved selling them at the Spring dance recital at MSU! Email Allison (Ehlers510@missouristate.edu) to sign up for the bake sales. We need volunteers to work one hour shifts starting at 11:30am and ending at 4pm. Also, mark your calendars for another bake night on Sunday February 12th. We will be making flowers to sell as well as cookies to decorate!

Looking for lesson plans or ideas? Go to DeepSpaceSparkle.com you'll LOVE it.
