Springfield Artist Passes Away

Robert E. Smith

October 13 1927 - Febuary 12 2010

His works are described as Bold, Colorful, and Honest. He was known as a man who wanted to make people smile and laugh, as is depicted in most of his art work. A replication of his painting is downtown on Campbell and Walnut. There is a blog dedicated to Robert at roberteugenesmith.blogspot.com. Here are posting of memories and updates of the memorial service to come. May Robert Rest in Peace

ARTIST CHALLENGE

Here is the first of many riddles to come...

Read the clues and figure out which artist is being described. Leave your answer in the comments. The first MSU NAEA member to leave the correct answer, as well as the name of two works of theirs, will win a free drink at our next meeting (February 22, 2010 at Panera off of National at 8:00 pm)!
Good Luck! :)

-they became an orphan at the age of 11
-had a violent temper (they had been arrested many times throughout their life)
-was ridiculed for using models from the lower classes of society
-is well known for their chiaroscuro technique of partially illuminating figures
-lived through the end of the 16th century and the beginning of the 17th century
-like many early European artists, they take their artist name from the town they were born in

UPDATE:

Congratulations, Allison Ackland-Coletta who said:

It must be Caravaggio. Two of his works include: "The Crucifixtion of Saint Peter" and "Judith Beheading Holofernes."

Tada!
